The style of leadership in any organisation is driven by many factors, e.g. communication, behaviour, others' perception of the leader, the esteem/respect in which the leader is held, implementation of the leader’s decisions.


A leader can work on the ethos that “the end justifies the means” or can be a values-centred person.  Irrespective of their stance, they will both lead, but by very different methods.

Performance

  • If you were asked to verbalise your interpretation of the word “performance” to enable you to provide a description of how you perform in the workplace, what would you say?
  • Using your description, how do you know how well you are performing at work?
  • How does your performance at work impact on your life at home?

One of the main key challenges for organisations is how to maximise people’s performance at work.  There are many myths surrounding what constitutes good and bad performance, an example being that the person who works the longest hours is the best performer, whilst on the other hand, poor performance can be attributed to lack of effort.  This is not true!  When levels of performance are below expectations, many organisations will turn to training as a solution.  This option will only work if the person identified for the training needs to be able to do something or they do not know how to do it.  If that person is knowledgeable about how to do something, additional training will not improve their performance. Almost the same level of impact can be placed on the willingness to do something as having the actually ability to do it.
